Le Pere Jules

Calvados & Cider

Le Pere Jules

It was upon his return from the First World War in 1919 that Jules Desfriches—already affectionately known as Père Jules ("Father Jules")—decided to turn his love for his native region and its apples into his trade. Orphaned at a young age, Jules was raised by his grandparents, passionate caretakers of Normandy and its natural treasures. With their guidance, he learned to craft cider using apples from the family farm and soon began selling his products locally.

Thanks to the quality of his cider, demand quickly grew, particularly among restaurants in Normandy. In 1923, Jules distilled Calvados for the first time, unaware that he was laying the foundation for what would become a long-standing institution.

In 1949, his son Léon Desfriches joined the family business. To honor his father, he created the brand Le Père Jules. Under Léon’s stewardship, production expanded, and their cider and Calvados began appearing in some of the finest restaurants across France.

In 1976, Thierry Desfriches, Jules’s grandson, joined his father in the business. With a keen eye for development, Thierry initiated export sales in 1980—first across Europe, and later worldwide.

After completing his studies in oenology in 2002, Guillaume Desfriches, son of Thierry, became the fourth generation to carry on the family legacy.

Since 1919, quality and dedication have been the driving forces behind four generations of producers, each remaining faithful to traditional methods and passionate about their craft. Their sole ambition: to offer only the finest products.

All of our ciders and Calvados are made from carefully selected apple and pear varieties, grown in traditional tall-tree orchards located in a protected Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) area.
