Description

Aged for 7 years in oak casks, Depaz VSOP very old rum develops flavors of vanilla, dried roasted fruit and tobacco. The attack on the palate is clean, powerful and fresh with the finish adding a more peppery touch.

Playing a special role in the soul of Saint Pierre for more than 350 years, the Depaz estate is located at the foot of the islands highest mountain, Mount Pelée.

In 1902, Mount Pelée delivered a devastating volcanic eruption which impassioned Victor Depaz, the sole surviving family member, to ultimately return to the estate in 1917 to successfully rebuild the Depaz chateau and the distillery.

It’s these volcanic ashes that today continue to fuel the rich development and production of the sugar cane that permeates Depaz with its explosive taste and character.

Rhum Agricole

Depaz

Heralding from the paradise isle of Martinique, in the lush French West Indies, Depaz Rum is born from the rhum agricole methods of production and features the exclusive use of luxurious, estate-grown, fresh-cut sugar cane.

Depaz Rums proudly holds the enviable French AOC – Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée designation for Rhum Agricole, confirming its strict adherence to precise standards of excellence.

The Depaz estate's history can be traced back to 1651, when it was established by Governor Jacques Duparquet.

The AOC Rhum Agricole de la Martinique:

  • Restricts production to the short, best season for the cane to pack aromas.

  • Requires that only the fresh juice of the cane be used — contrary to 95% of the world’s rums, which use by-products like molasses and crushed stalks from the sugar refining industry.

Agricole Rum belongs in the world of cognac or Armagnac, whereas Traditional Rum (also known as Industrial Rum) is more comparable to grappa or pomace spirits.

Probably the best of Martinique rums, Depaz bears the legacy of the Montagne Pelée volcanic eruption on May 8th, 1902, which tragically killed 30,000 inhabitants of the town of St. Pierre.

The Depaz plantation, covered in ash, was only able to resume sugar cane crops many years later — but with significantly increased yields and superior cane juice quality, thanks to the fertilizing properties of the volcanic ash.
