Description

A young, vibrant calvados distilled from apple and pear.

This 2013 vintage comes from distiller/farmer Victor Gontier, who’s located in the Domfrontais region.

According to the importers, “Long after the outcome of mobile phones, calling Victor Gontier on the only landline by their entrance door, one would enjoy a cacophony of chook noises , roosters calls, pigs squeals in the courtyard, confirming the authenticity of the place and thus of its production.”

The controlled Domfrontais appellation requires at least 35 percent pear juice, which gives a softer character and lends itself to quicker maturation.

Calvados Domfrontais

Victor Gontier

For three generations, this small farm has been producing Calvados in the heart of the Calvados Domfrontais Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) — a region known for its unique blend of apples and pears. Rooted deeply in local tradition, the farm follows time-honored methods, reflecting a way of life that values authenticity over commercial compromise.

Unlike the more widely known Pays d’Auge Calvados, which is made solely from apples and requires longer aging, Domfrontais Calvados must include at least one-third pears. This results in a spirit that is naturally fruitier and rounder when young, with a rustic, farm-style character that speaks to its origins.

But this producer doesn’t stop at Calvados. They are equally known for their traditional apple and pear ciders. Made from 100% pure juice, these ciders — like all French ciders and perry — are legally required to be free of additives, with only minimal sulphite permitted under strict regulations.

This is a crucial distinction. In many other countries, ciders can legally contain up to 45% added water, along with sugar, artificial or natural flavorings, extra alcohol, and preservatives. Here, that’s simply not the case. What you get is the real thing: pure fruit, fermented with care, just as it has been for generations.
