Description

After over three years of age in the purest tradition of HSE rums, this VSOP will have spent more than eight months in 225-litre Port barrels. This “special reserve,” which enriches the HSE “Finitions du Monde” range, combines the evocative and subtle notes specific to Port wines with the characteristic gourmandize of a very old agricultural rum from Martinique.

Tasting Notes:

The nose opens with delicate aromas of mocha, freshly roasted cocoa, and blackberry jam. Agitation reveals beautiful notes of cinnamon, date, and peach in the alcohol. The palate offers a smooth and balanced attack. The empyreumatic notes give way to a delicious and honeyed finish where the aromas of fig and black fruits mingle in an extended harmony.

About The Producer

Habitation Saint-Etienne (HSE) was one of the main Martinique sugar factories during the 19th century. Converted as other sugar factories into a Rhum Agricole distillery at the end of the 19th century, its distillery activities were ended in 1988. Rum is since distilled at the Simon distillery not far from the Francois village. Blending, maturing, and barrel aging activities are still conducted at the Habitation Saint-Etienne domain. The AOC Rhum Agricole de la Martinique restricts production to the short best season for the cane to pack aromas, compels that all and only the fresh juice of the cane be used, contrary to 95% of the world rums using the left-overs (Molasses, stalks) of the sugar refining industry. Agricole Rum belongs to the world of cognac or Armagnac, whereas Traditional Rum (also known as Industrial) is in the grappa/pomace world. Habitation St Etienne is famous for its Strong Bourbon cask finish but for its unusual cask finish in Islay, Pedro Jimenez, Oloroso, and Sauternes.
