Description

Folle Blanche is the historic variety of Armagnac which once dominated the vineyards before their destruction by phylloxera in 1878; it was then called the "piquepoult". Today, a few small vineyards remain, but its cultivation is very difficult. Tasting note: - The appearance reveals a very lovely amber hue with sparkling gold highlights. - The nose is very subtle associating prune aromas with a light but intense rancio, and a spicy finish. - In the mouth, the attack is pure/direct. Plenty of body with hints of preserved fruit, kirsch, and lots of spices. - After opening, the bottom of the glass is majestic with liquorice, wooded, fat/oily notes.

About The Producer

Armagnac Gelas besides being amongst the very best is famous for his single varietal Armagnacs ( Folle Blanche, Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Baco ) giving a sort of academic understanding of Armagnac.ÊHis fame is also due to the sheer number of Cask Finish ( Vosges Oak, Marsala, Oloroso, De Bortoli Noble One, ÊSwiss Amigne Mitis, De Bortoli Black Noble, Maury, Amarone Zanoni, Lynch Bages red and Lynch Bages White etc.) Ê
Family traces go way back to 1246, in the form of the KingÕs Musketeer, DÕArtagnan (born Charles de Batz), but it was really not until around the middle of the 19th century that the GŽlas family linked its own destiny to that of Armagnac. In 1865, Guillaume GŽlas, a respected barrel maker, bequeathed his business to his son Baptiste, who in turn created the Maison GŽlas. He duly moved into the premises currently occupied by the firm and embarked on the business of making and selling Armagnacs.
In 1910, his son Louis acquired a property planted with Manciet vines, the Ch‰teau de Martet (Martet Castle) which is still in the family fold.
After the Second World War, Pierre followed in his fatherÕs footsteps and lent the family firm an international dimension. He revolutionised his times by offering on an exclusive basis Armagnacs hailing from the terroirs or local regions of Bas Armagnac and La TŽnarze, at their natural degree of ageing, without reduction. This unique selection of proprietors lends the resulting product a fine reputation at the grandest of tables, be it in France or abroad.

Yep, good stuff

I love my Armagnac - I have been to Southern France many times to test my theory. Armagnac is so much better than Cognac as it still tastes like a grape product and not just a spirit. Values for money makes Armagnac superior.
