The ancient Persian book of Kings - the Shahnameh - tells of a time when the King demanded that India send him 10,000 musicians to entertain him. They did, and the King was so pleased that he gave each musician an ox, a donkey and a cart filled with wheat so they could wander the countryside, support themselves on the crop they grew and entertain the people of Persia.
Of course, these were musicians - a group of people famously incompetent at pretty much everything except music and trashing hotel rooms. So, it was to no one's surprise when they returned to the King a year later, having eaten through their supplies.
The King, of course, was furious and expelled them to Europe. The Europeans assumed that they had migrated from Egypt and began to call them "Gypsies", along with the usual persecution of outsiders which we're all familiar with.
How true is this story? We have no idea.
What we do know is that the name of THE GYPSY brings a hint of exotic spices, a touch of the orient and a hint of magic. Just the thing to describe our latest blend of gin.

A bold nose of vanilla, juniper-spice, fortified and defined by wormwood-driven herbaceous tones and surrounded with a floral veil. The up front palate is commanded by a confectionery juniper-come-aniseed flavour that stretches full, leaving a warm finish decorated with cinnamon and almond nuttiness. A rich experience, as gentle as a 69% spirit could possibly be. The ultimate cocktail gin, with rich flavour and punch.

This new gin has a new star ingredient: pear.
We have blended a variety of pear traditionally used to make pear cider in Normandy, known as Domfront, with juniper, vanilla, lemon, black pepper and iris root. A typical Norman cottage will have irises growing along the ridge of the thatched roof.
Pira is crafted according to our original gin recipe, in which each ingredient is macerated and distilled separately in order to extract the full aroma. The distillates are then assembled just before bottling.
Pira packaging replicates the visual identity of Christian Drouin Gin, but in a luscious raw green hue that brings pears to mind. It tastes of mouth-watering white fruit, black pepper and iris, as ever with the full-bodied flavour that has forged the reputation of gins by Drouin.
Serving suggestion: Serve neat or with tonic water, with a sliver of pear or an elderflower to garnish.

The fresh spirit of Tasmania?s ancient Huon Pine, iridescent abalone shell and pristine water. A nod to a London Dry, our Dry Gin features the four key botanicals of sage, abalone shell, Huon Pine needles and red grapefruit. Fresh sage is grown in our distillery garden and we source the shell whilst on family abalone dives. Once cleaned, the shell is dried and broken into tiny pieces to infuse in the gin. Abalone shell, used in Chinese medicine, is a calcium carbonate to neutralise the acids and adds a slight salinity. Huon Pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii) is a species of conifer native to Tasmania. It is found by the edge of rivers and is an incredibly slow growing, revered local timber. The needles provide pine notes that differ to juniper and add to the complexity of the dryness.
