Have you ever wondered what Navy strength actually means? And what's it got to do with Gin?
Sit down and pour yourself a glass my friend and wonder no longer.
We enter the Royal British Navy, an organisation that liked their gin very boozy indeed. They found that if you mix a 'Navy' strength gin, around 57-58% with gunpowder [as you do when you're stuck on a boat for months on end with very little entertainment] - it still ignites if it has enough alcohol in it. "Proof" it's good, really.
Bit of food for thought while you enjoy this slow sipper.

The fresh spirit of Tasmania?s ancient Huon Pine, iridescent abalone shell and pristine water. A nod to a London Dry, our Dry Gin features the four key botanicals of sage, abalone shell, Huon Pine needles and red grapefruit. Fresh sage is grown in our distillery garden and we source the shell whilst on family abalone dives. Once cleaned, the shell is dried and broken into tiny pieces to infuse in the gin. Abalone shell, used in Chinese medicine, is a calcium carbonate to neutralise the acids and adds a slight salinity. Huon Pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii) is a species of conifer native to Tasmania. It is found by the edge of rivers and is an incredibly slow growing, revered local timber. The needles provide pine notes that differ to juniper and add to the complexity of the dryness.

The age of reason. According to the freshness and the balance of Armagnacs of this age, it is sometimes time, at the end of 50 years to stop the barrel ageing. However, the use of barrels that have been exhausted of their tannins over many years in contact with the eau de vie is still possible. The aromas of chocolate, leather and roasted notes are characteristic of these very old eaux de vie.

We find these balsamic aromas, licorice, chocolate on the palate with a more spicy finish: white pepper, candied ginger. Nice length in the mouth.

After an initial maturation in traditional oak casks for at least 6 months, this Brandy is finished in a selection of Sauternes wine casks sourced from some of the grandest Chateaux of this prestigious Bordeaux sweet white wine region. This special second maturation is carefully supervised by our Master Blender in order to reach the perfect balance between the Sauternes casks typicity and the character of Monteru.
This Brandy, which is packed with apricots, boasts an elegant pale yellow colour. At first, the nose reveals notes of honey and yellow flowers, followed by comforting aromas of freshly toasted bread and apricots.
The mouth is delicate and silky, revealing flavours of dried tropical fruit.
The finish reveals subtle notes of nuts, dried fruit and baked apricot tart.

The Triple Burnt Special Cask Finish is the result of a specific process which consists of scraping out and toasting the inside of secondhand red wine casks. These American oak casks are charred three times: once lightly and twice heavily with a blowtorch. We love the typical vanilla and strong caramel notes which the burnt wood brings to our Monteru Brandy.
Tasting Notes:
The magnificent limpid caramel colour is a hint to the richness of this special finish brandy.
The nose tells tales of a bakery where hotcakes have just come out of the oven, complex with aromas of dried fig, walnut, menthol and a hint of cocoa powder.
The mouth is very expressive with typical Bourbon aromas such as smooth caramel and smoky vanilla. The palate boasts notes of raisins, walnut and a herbal touch, reminiscent of traditional vermouth.
The long-lasting finish reveals accents of toasted almonds and dried herbs
